Lagos, April 15, 2020- Ecobank Nigeria encourages unbanked and underbanked Nigerians to open instant bank accounts by simply dialing the bank’s USSD code * 326 #. Nigeria’s unbanked and underbanked population is mainly made up of artisans such as mechanics, carpenters, electricians, small retailers, transporters, and others who depend primarily on daily income for their survival.
According to the bank, having bank accounts will allow them to save easily and access microloans (Xpress loan). It will also allow them to easily receive monetary support from friends and family in times of need, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown period, while maintaining social distancing through digital transactions, with the aim to control the spread of the virus.
The bank’s mobile channels– Ecobank Mobile and * 326 # make it easy to open Ecobank Xpress, an end-to-end digital account instantly. With this account, customers can receive funds, send money, purchase airtime, and perform basic banking transactions from the comfort of their own homes. No paperwork or documentation is required, everything happens on mobile. Additionally, as of last year, Ecobank waived USSD session fees, allowing users of the bank’s USSD, * 326 #, to transact without session fees.

Ms. Olukorede Demola-Adeniyi, Head of Consumer Banking Services, Ecobank Nigeria, noted that “Every Nigerian should necessarily have bank accounts that can help them save quickly, access loans and other financial aid when the need arises.”
In addition, she reiterated that “Ecobank Mobile and * 326 # provide easy, affordable and convenient financial services to young people and members of the public who previously lacked access to formal banking services. Ecobank Nigeria previously announced a zero rate for digital money transfers below N 5,000 for its customers until April 30, 2020 ” as part of the bank’s initiatives to encourage affordable and secure banking during lockdown.
According to Ms. Demola-Adeniyi, beyond owning bank accounts, every customer of the bank can use the various digital offers of the bank, which allows them to easily carry out transactions, safely and conveniently from the comfort of their own homes.
